Elder Fraud Alert: ‘Banker’ asks for credit-debit cards

Durham Police is alerting seniors in the region about a new scam targeting elders.

An alert said on Wednesday, February 7, an elderly couple received a phone call from an unknown suspect claiming to be from their bank telling them their bank accounts were compromised.

The suspect advised the elderly couple that a courier would come by and pick up their credit and debit cards to give to the police.

A suspect then attended their home in the area of Highway 2 and Maple Grove Road in Clarington and obtained their cards and pin numbers. The cards were then used to withdraw money from their bank account and make purchases, police said.

The suspect is described as: male, 25-35 years old, medium build, long black hair with a full black beard. He was wearing a green baseball cap with a red logo on front, green sweater with a white logo on chest and sleeves, and grey pants (see image above).

A four-door black car with tinted windows may be involved, police said.

Anyone who can identify the suspect or has any information about this incident is asked to contact D/Cst. Kane of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5371.
