Police investigating if incident is hate-related: Mayor Carter
In response to the incident, Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter issued a public statement expressing concern and support for the victim.
“I am very concerned and troubled by this shocking act of violence that occurred in Oshawa. My thoughts and sympathies are with the individual who was assaulted,” said Carter. “Oshawa is a city that values inclusion, respect, and safety. Everyone should feel secure in their workplace or business, and no one should have to experience hateful or unlawful actions that take away from that sense of safety.”
Hate-and race-related incidents have been rising across southern Durham, especially since the start of the current war in the Middle East.
Mayor Carter also noted that the incident is in the early stages of investigation, and DRPS is exploring all possible motives, including whether the attack may have been hate-motivated.
