The Joyce Family Foundation has donated $1.5 million to Durham College (DC) to support students facing adversity through a new bursary, Durham College reports.
The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary will be awarded to up to 10 students annually entering preparatory programs. The bursary will cover tuition for the entry program and continued studies at DC for up to four years.
Durham College offers preparatory programs such as Trades Fundamentals, Business Fundamentals, Foundations in Art and Design, Culinary Skills, and General Arts and Science. These programs provide foundational skills in specific industries to prepare students for further study or work, according to the college.
Maureen O’Neill, Executive Director of The Joyce Family Foundation, said the foundation focuses on providing access to education for children and youth with financial need or other socio-economic barriers. “Education can act as a catalyst for change and is a key factor in helping young people discover and release their own potential,” she said, as quoted by Durham College.
During a visit to DC’s Oshawa campus, O’Neill toured the Nursing Teaching Lab, Paramedic Lab and Dental Clinic and learned about pathways available to students in Pre-Health Sciences programs, Durham College states. Graduates of these programs can continue education in Practical Nursing, Paramedic or Dental Hygiene, or use their credentials in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Recipients of the bursary will also have access to the Alumni Mentorship Program, pairing them with a mentor during their studies, Durham College says. This program provides support for skill development and career focus.
Dr. Elaine Popp, President of Durham College, said, “By providing sustained financial support and mentorship, this bursary fosters resilience, builds confidence, and opens pathways to long-term academic and personal success,” according to Durham College.
Applications for The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary will open in January 2026.
