The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has welcomed a new member to its K9 Unit following the successful certification of Constable Marissa Galipeau and Police Service Dog (PSD) Koa.
According to DRPS, PSD Koa is a two-year-old German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix who was born in Spain. The duo recently completed 14 weeks of intensive training, earning certification in patrol duties including tracking, building searches, evidence recovery, and obedience.
Koa’s journey to Durham Region included stops in Spain, Florida, and Alabama. Now, he’ll be patrolling alongside Cst. Galipeau as part of A Platoon. DRPS says Koa is a determined and resilient dog, known for his big heart and unwavering focus in the field.
When off duty, Koa enjoys playing fetch, trail running with Cst. Galipeau, and spending time with his favourite toy, a pillow on a rope.
The DRPS K9 Unit expressed excitement about the team’s addition, noting their readiness to serve and support policing efforts across the region.
Welcome Cst. Marissa and PSD Koa! We look forward to seeing you in the community.
