The Municipality of Clarington has approved the relocation of the historic Lambert House to another area within the Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital site, to accommodate the hospital’s upcoming expansion.
The Ontario government on October 1 announced the issuing of a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select the team that will lead the expansion and revitalization of Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville Hospital.
The project will more than double the hospital’s capacity by adding up to 32 new beds and state-of-the-art facilities to expand inpatient and ambulatory care services and the emergency department.
Lambert House
Originally built as a nurses’ residence, Lambert House has been recognized for its cultural and architectural significance and has been listed on Clarington’s Municipal Register of Heritage Properties since 2018. As part of the hospital redevelopment, the house will be moved to a new location on the same property, facing Prince Street, and will be formally designated under the Ontario Heritage Act following its relocation and restoration, said a municipal notice.
The Clarington Heritage Committee and council have expressed strong support for preserving the building’s legacy while enabling vital healthcare infrastructure improvements. The relocation of the Lambert House will make way for the transformative expansion of Bowmanville Hospital—a project that will bring modern, accessible health care closer to home for residents across Durham Region.
