Mayor Roy welcomes Ford’s comments on Whitby hospital

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is reported to have made comments on radio referring to a new hospital in the Town of Whitby.

About a week ago, the town had launched a community advocacy campaign for a new hospital (see story below).

“I was pleased to hear Premier Doug Ford go on record saying “there’s going to be a Whitby hospital” during a February 15 interview on CKDO Radio,” said Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy.

“Thank you to the province for listening to our community’s collective voice. During the February 15 interview, the Premier noted that ‘very shortly, we will be issuing the planning grants’,” she pointed out.

Both the $3 million capital planning grant for Lakeridge Health and the disposition of the land for the new hospital are necessary for the project to move forward.

“We are committed to continuing our campaign over the next seven weeks, or until a formal announcement from the province is made for the planning grant and the land disposition,” said the mayor.

She slaimed the advocacy campaign has been a massive success over the first week, with 1,600 community members submitting letters to the province and sharing their personal stories about the need for a new hospital.

“Thank you to all those who have supported the campaign so far. I encourage Durham residents to visit whitby.ca/NewHospital to sign our call-to-action letter or share a personal story,” Mayor Roy added.
