The Municipality of Clarington is pleased to announce the appointment of Mariano Perini as Clarington’s new Director of Emergency and Fire Services and Fire Chief.
“On behalf of Clarington Council, I want to welcome Mariano to Clarington’s senior leadership team as he leads our excellent team of first responders. I’m confident that with his progressive leadership and guidance, Clarington will continue to deliver high-quality fire protection and emergency response services to our growing community,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
Chief Perini is a 20-year resident of Clarington and joins us from Whitby Fire, where he is currently the Acting Fire Chief and previously held the position of Deputy Fire Chief since 2014.
Chief Perini has spent the last 32 years of his career focused on public service in both an operational and administrative capacity. He began his career in emergency services with the Durham Regional Police Service in 1991 and later joined the Office of the Fire Marshal as a Fire Investigator in 2002. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, a diploma in Fire Studies, and is a graduate of the Ontario Fire College and Ontario Police College.
As an ambassador with Wounded Warriors, Chief Perini also brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding surrounding mental health and the effects Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can have on our first responders and their families. He is an advocate for mental health education and will assist Clarington Fire in its efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in a profession where first responders often deal with some incredibly devastating and profound incidents.

In his new role, Chief Perini will also assume the duties of the Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC), leading Clarington’s emergency response during critical incidents.
As Director of Clarington’s Emergency and Fire Services, Chief Perini will be responsible for leading, managing, planning, and overseeing all aspects of the Fire Department, including the operation and management of Clarington’s five fire stations and approximately 75 full-time and 125 volunteer staff.
Chief Perini will officially assume his new role on Monday, August 30.
