Durham regional Police service (DRPS) said Project Atlantis II, which is aimed at ensuring safety in Downtown Oshawa, will be launched today.
DRPS said it will unveil new equipment to support the project. “As part of the launch, DRPS will also unveil new equipment designed to support officers and partners in enhancing visibility, responsiveness, and overall safety in the downtown core,” said a police statement.
Crime, homelessness and drug abuse are chronic issues in Downtown Oshawa.
“DRPS, in partnership with the City of Oshawa, Municipal By‑law Enforcement, and Oshawa Corporate Security, will formally launch Project Atlantis II, a coordinated, proactive policing and community safety initiative focused on Downtown Oshawa,” said the statement.
Led by DRPS’s Community Response Unit (CRU), Project Atlantis II takes a balanced approach to community safety through education, engagement, visibility, and enforcement, while strengthening collaboration between police, municipal partners, and security services, it added.
While this initiative represents the fifth consecutive year of focused downtown safety efforts in Oshawa, 2026 marks the second year operating under the Project Atlantis framework, building on lessons learned and established partnerships from previous years, the police said.
