Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster yesterday condoled the passing away of Gordon (Gord) Lowery. He was 96-years old.
“Clarington, especially the Village of Orono, has suffered a heartbreaking loss with the passing of Gord Lowery, an exceptional citizen whose legacy shaped amateur athletics in Orono,” said Foster.
“Gord was a legend in our hockey arenas and on our soccer fields. He was a community builder in the village, with long-standing involvement with the local sports leagues. He truly cared about putting the needs of others above his own and was Clarington’s Senior of the Year in 2013. Gord was a champion, a friend, and an inspiration to many in our community,” he added.
On behalf of council and the Municipality of Clarington, Foster extended sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those grieving his loss.
Orono Amateur Athletic Association, said the OAAA family extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the entire Orono community on the passing of Gord Lowery.
“A former president and long-standing board member of the OAAA, Gord has played a key role in supporting and growing both minor hockey and soccer through community programming in the village. He is also well known for cutting some of the most pristine grass for Orono’s soccer program (something he took great pride in) and for often wandering up to the arena to take in a game, no matter the age group. His involvement has extended beyond hockey and soccer, including participation in the governance of the Orono Arena and Community Centre, reflecting a broader commitment to community infrastructure and engagement,” the OAAA said.
“Thank you, for everything you brought to Orono and to all of us. Rest in peace, Gord,” it added.
