No DRPS fault in motorcyclist losing his leg: SIU

A Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigation has cleared Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) of any criminal fault in the case of a motorcyclist crashing and having had to have his leg amputated.

The incident happened on February 19 in Bowmanville, in the Municipality of Clarington.

“The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Joseph Martino, has found no reasonable grounds to believe that a Durham Regional Police Service officer committed a criminal offense in relation to the serious injuries that a motorcyclist who fled the police suffered when he fell from his motorcycle,” said a statement from the SIU.

On February 19, a police officer attempted to arrest the 41-year-old motorcycle driver for speeding and driving without a license.

The police officer stopped pursuing the motorcyclist who fled at high speed before falling from his motorcycle.

The man cut his arm and suffered multiple fractures. He also had to have his leg amputated, the statement said.
