The much-talked about ‘gondola’ project in Oshawa is planned to end up all the way north at Highway 407, according to the Region of Durham.
“It is proposed to run on Simcoe Street South from Lakeview Park to Highway 407,” said a communication from the region to Durham Post.
The region’s Committee of the Whole has sent the gondola proposal – formally known as the Aerial Cable Car Transit (ACCT) project – for presentation to Oshawa Council. The presentation is expected to be made in the third quarter of this year (see below).
The Region of Durham said the proposed ACCT) project was moved forward following four rounds of public consultations that took place between September 2022 and November 2023.
To improve transit service along Simcoe Street, the project cost of the ACCT is estimated at just under $1.1 billion, which would require senior level government funding to be implemented. However, based on a high-level forecast, over a 60-year project life cycle, the ACCT would net a profit of $828 million, the region said.
Other options studied by the region included Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT), as well as Monorail, Subway and High-Frequency Bus Services.

What a stupid idea
What an absolute waste of money. We need improvements to infrastructure, more health care prevention and treatment, education resources, affordable housing and other crisis management. Once every one is housed, fed, healthy, educated and employed (plus or minus expected fluctuations) we can consider useless forms of transportation. Those gondola will work so well during our winters (read with sarcasm.)
It’s a bit late for April fools jokes. That’s what this HAS to be .. right?
How about a subway too? Idiots.
