Oshawa creates Task Force on community safety

Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter has announced the formation of a Task Force that brings together community stakeholders to identify and propose opportunities to address community safety, security and well-being issues facing the city.

The Task Force will address priorities in multiple phases. Phase 1 will focus on downtown Oshawa and the surrounding area, with additional phases to be identified as necessary that may focus on other areas of the city, said a city statement.

Chaired by Deputy Mayor and Regional and City Councillor Bob Chapman, members of the task force include Mayor Dan Carter and representatives from the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, Durham Regional Police Services and social service agencies, as well as representation from the local business community, community partners and residents. The mandate of the Task Force is to work collaboratively with Oshawa City Council and staff to identify and propose opportunities that aim to address local issues affecting community safety, security and well-being.

Key objectives of the Task Force are to:

  • engage and collaborate with local businesses, residents and other stakeholders regarding community safety, security and well-being issues and potential opportunities for improvement;
  • ensure that the work of the Task Force complements and enhances the efforts and activities of the Regional-wide Community Safety Well-being Plan; and,
  • support communications regarding outcomes of the Task Force and increased awareness of safety, security and well-being in the community.

“The City of Oshawa is leading change by finding new and innovative ways to address our unique challenges, however we cannot do it alone. I’m excited to initiate the important work of this Task Force, which includes key community partners who will help us build a better city for everyone,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter.
