Pickering tops Ontario for festivals, Oshawa ranks high

The City of Pickering yesterday announced that it has been awarded the 2025 Municipality of the Year Award by Festivals & Events Ontario.

The award celebrates municipalities, towns, and cities that have demonstrated commitment to supporting and enhancing festivals and events. Pickering’s recognition is a testament to its efforts in cultivating an atmosphere where cultural initiatives flourish, reinforcing its role as a community, said a city statement.

Pickering has earned this honour in the population category of 50,000 to 150,000.

“I am delighted that the city has been recognized for its commitment to creating an inclusive, welcoming, and vibrant city,” said Marisa Carpino, Chief Administrative Officer. “Investing in the arts, culture, festivals, and events is key to that vision, and plays an essential role in defining a city’s identity, celebrating cultural diversity and fostering a strong sense of community pride.”

Adding to this achievement, the city’s Cultural Fusion Festival has been named one of the Top 100 Festivals & Events in Ontario, recognized for its contributions to the industry.

“I am exceptionally proud that Pickering has been recognized as a leader for its thriving cultural and events scene,” said Mayor Kevin Ashe. “Cultural Fusion is a true reflection of our City’s commitment to inclusivity and celebration of community culture, and this festival brings together local talent, artists, and traditions, strengthening civic pride and social cohesion. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to our incredible Cultural Services and Events teams for bringing this vision to life.”

Five Oshawa festivals

The City of Oshawa has announced its success at the Festivals & Events Ontario (FEO) Awards 2025, with five of its festivals recognized among the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario.

The five Oshawa festivals named to the FEO Top 100 are:

Officials say that these events represent Oshawa’s cultural scene and provide experiences for event-goers, events that foster community connection and celebrate the traditions that define Oshawa.

In addition to being named among the Top 100 Festivals, the Indigenous Cultural Celebration also received two awards:

  • Best New Festival
  • FEO Impact Award

The Indigenous Cultural Celebration debuted as a part of the city’s 100th Anniversary Celebrations and has emerged as a highlight in Oshawa. This unique festival brings together various First Nations, Inuit and Métis presenters and storytellers across several mediums and disciplines, and reflects the values of truth and reconciliation. Its recognition with the FEO Impact Award underscores its commitment to cultural diversity and social impact.

Upcoming Events

The Peony Festival, celebrating its 13th FEO Top 100 award, will showcase spring blooms, artisans, and entertainment on June 7 and 8 at Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens. Kars on King, returning to downtown Oshawa on August 22, will showcase hundreds of classic cars and live performances. The Indigenous Cultural Celebration at Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park on May 31 offers presentations and interactive workshops. Finally Convergence, which is organized by Oshawa Tourism on September 19 and 20, will provide a celebration of art, culture, and innovation, offering attendees an immersive experience in downtown Oshawa.
