Planned large Newcastle housing project may be hit by thirst

Clarington is asking Durham Region to address infrastructure delay concerns, especially as a large housing project may be impacted.

Clarington Council voted recently to request that Durham Region moves forward with the Zone 1 Reservoir and Zone 2 Pumping Station in Newcastle.

“The Region of Durham operates and maintains the water and sewer infrastructure. There are concerns that a delay in constructing the new infrastructure needed in Newcastle could result in delays in planning for a large housing development,” said a Clarington statement.

It did not name the development.

Earlier this year, the council endorsed Clarington’s Housing Pledge to support accelerating the housing supply in Ontario. One of the action items in that report included working with Durham Region to coordinate land use and infrastructure planning to increase the prompt servicing of secondary plan areas to support the construction of new homes.

Clarington Council asked the Region of Durham to report on the timelines for the water system infrastructure needed in Newcastle, the statement said.
