Police gets $4.23mn funding to make Durham safer

The Ontario government is investing $3,084,651 in Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Board through the Community Safety and Policing Grant Program.

Durham institutions are receiving a total of $4.38 million in grants from Ontario.

The Community Safety and Policing Grant Program grant to DRPS is part of the $91.2 million total disbursements under the program to help protect families and communities across the province, according to a statement from Queen’s Park.

Of the 127 projects being funded, 88 projects will address local priorities and 39 projects will address provincial priorities, including gun and gang related violence, sexual violence and harassment, human trafficking, mental health and addictions, hate-motivated crime, housing and homelessness, and commercial/retail theft.

The statement detailed the grants as below:

  • $3,084,651 for Project Oracle which builds on work that began in 2022 and focuses on protecting the province’s borders through the expansion of marine patrol, improved monitoring through the integration of video technology, improvements to the Gun and Gang Unit, creation of a targeted retail theft team and the development of a Field Intelligence Officer program.
  • $900,000 is from the Preventing Auto Theft Grant
  • $157,575 for Durham Community Action Group under the Safer and Vital Communities Grant
  • $150,000 is from Victim Support Grant for Project Comfort (Community Organizations Managing Focus On Response to Trauma), which will give DRPS, working with Bethesda House, the ability to provide short-term shelter, without delay, to survivors of trauma associated with gender- based violence, sexual violence and human trafficking. This will provide immediate security and trauma-informed support to those who need it most. Funds will also be used to support victims in locating short-term housing and allow Victims Services of Durham Region to expand its virtual reality game used to educate youth on topics such as sextortion, sexting, cyber safety, and sexual violence.
  • $100,000 from Ontario CCTV Grant
  • Other monies received are from the RIDE grant,
