Police probe racist graffiti at Visual Arts Centre of Clarington

The Municipality of Clarington is speaking out following the discovery of anti-Black racist graffiti at the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington.

In a statement issued by Mayor Adrian Foster, the municipality strongly condemned the act, calling it unacceptable and not reflective of the community’s values.

“As Mayor of Clarington, I am both frustrated and angry to learn of the defacement of a cherished public facility with racist graffiti,” said Foster. “This act is completely unacceptable and does not represent the beliefs and values of our community. Let me be clear: hate has no place in Clarington.”

Mayor Foster thanked staff for quickly removing the offensive graffiti and reaffirmed Clarington’s commitment to inclusivity and community unity.

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) stated that they are investigating the incident, confirming that all potential motives—including a racial element—are being thoroughly examined. The police emphasized that they do not tolerate any form of hate speech or hate-motivated crime and remain committed to upholding safety, dignity, and respect for all members of the community.

Councillor Lloyd Rang, who serves as Council Liaison to the Clarington Anti-Black Racism Advisory Committee, echoed the sentiment: “We in Clarington condemn this and all anti-Black racism,” he stated.

Clarington says it remains committed to building a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for everyone.

There have been several hate-related incidents recently across southern Durham, but mainly related to the ongoing Middle East war (see below).
