Rear-ended 88-year old e-bike rider hit by oncoming car, dies

An 88-year-old man has died as a result of injuries sustained in a collision earlier this month in Whitby, according to Durham Regional Police.

Police say the incident occurred on Friday, May 2, at about 10:20 am near Lake Ridge Road North and Taunton Road. Officers from Central West Division responded to a three-vehicle collision involving an enclosed single-rider e-bike, a Jeep Wrangler, and a Hyundai Veloster.

According to investigators, the e-bike was travelling southbound on Lake Ridge Road when it was struck from behind by a southbound Jeep Wrangler. The impact caused the e-bike to veer into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by a northbound Hyundai Veloster.

The 88-year-old e-bike operator was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

Durham police confirmed that the man succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital on May 15.

Members of the Durham Regional Police Service Traffic Services Branch – Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene and conducted a full investigation. The roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected.

Anyone with information about this incident or who witnessed this collision is asked to call D/Cst. Rayne of the Collision Investigation Unit at 905-579-1520 (toll-free 1-888-579-1520) ext. 5256.
