Durham police have arrested – with the help of tips from the public – the male responsible for a violent sexual assault in Whitby.
Following an extensive investigation by members of the Special Victims Unit, with the assistance of tips from the public, the suspect was identified, said police yesterday.
On Thursday, July 16, investigators with the Special Victims Unit, with the assistance of the Offender Management Unit, located the suspect in Whitby and took him into custody without incident.
At the time of this incident, the accused was bound by house arrest curfew conditions, police said.
The suspect, age 33 from Ajax was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
The Assault
On Monday, July 13 at about 10:15 pm, members of Central West Division responded to a sexual assault at Iroquois Beach Park in the area of Gordon Street and Waterfront Trail. Police were contacted after receiving reports of a female who was sexually assaulted.
The victim was leaving Iroquois Beach Park, walking along the sand path that runs north-west toward Gordon Street, when she was assaulted by an unknown male. The suspect forced the victim off the path into a tree line where he made threats and sexually assaulted her.
