RIDE Tweetalong: Wave down, fast-and-furious, sober drivers…

Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) had a busy night during the first RIDE Tweetalong which lasted from 7 pm till midnight yesterday.

Officers are setting up a RIDE spot check. We will let you know what they find – hopefully all sober drivers, said an early tweet.

As expected, officers had numerous vehicles come through. “One 3-day suspension. It’s really busy on the roadways tonight,” said one of the tweets.

Another said: “Officers pulled one vehicle over for a ASD test. Driver blew under. Phew.”

Third, a novice driver, was not so lucky.

This driver was on the cell phone, not really paying attention to the roadway. Was texting and driving along Harmony Road. This is a $615 ticket. It really is not worth it, said the police. “If this novice driver is convicted in court, he may face a possible suspension,” it added.

Officers even got thanked for the job they were doing, being out all season in extremely cold weather and always busy.

“This driver, among many others, was happy to see officers out keeping the roads safe. We had many thumbs up,” said a tweet.
One of the drivers was not fortunate. Driver stopped in downtown Oshawa for having an extremely expired validation tag. All other documents in order. This carries a $110 fine, said the DRPS.

Then there was the call for the fast-and-furious driver who got away.

DRPS said we have now been called to Oshawa Center for a BMW driving aggressively. Driver tried to pull into a parking spot and maybe getting in some last minute shopping.

“The driver got away this time… but according to the complainant, it was something like the Fast and Furious. Speeding and weaving in traffic,” said a tweet.

Earlier, the police were called to assist a uniform officer at a collision at Stevenson Road and Cartier Avenue. Alcohol may be a factor. said a tweet later adding that it turned out not to be an impaired driver.

Wave Shuttle

Watson Street West was closed at Victoria Street West in Whitby for a collision involving an autonomous vehicle (Wave). The male operator suffered critical injuries. Taken to a trauma center. Collision investigators on scene with Ministry of Labour, said the DRPS.
