When a left turn may constitute ‘stunt driving’

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has felt the need to remind Durham drivers of one of the less known definitions of ‘stunt driving.

Chiming in with the ongoing Festive RIDE campaign and the Durham Vision Zero mission, DRPS East Division officers said drivers who are turning left as the light turns solid green, cutting off through traffic, qualify as stunt driving.

They explained that when a driver is stopped at a red light, and when the signal turns green and a vehicle accelerates quickly to make a left hand turn, in order to beat oncoming traffic, it constitutes stunt driving as it means cutting off the through traffic.

Improper left turn can bring on:

  • Up to $10,000 fine;
  • 6 demerit points;
  • 14-day vehicle impound (at roadside); and
  • 30-day driver licence suspension.

  1. That’s bull shit. Often times light turns green and drivers on oncoming lane are not paying attention and the left turning driver has an opportunity to make a safe left. Cops got nothing better to worry about.
