Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Did it fizzle or did it burst?

In its last update at 11:10 pm last night, Environment Canada said conditions in southern Durham were favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

It forecast wind gusts of up to 90 kmh and almost toonie-sized hail until after midnight.

Environment Canada said thunderstorms were continuing to move east across southern Ontario last evening, but were expected to slowly weaken as the night progressed.

Some municipalities have their waste collection day today, and it is hoped residents were able to batten down their recycling boxes.

It said lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches, it added.

It was still relatively calm in southeastern Durham just past midnight.
