Two airlifted to Toronto after weekend crashes

Durham police yesterday confirmed that two people were airlifted to Toronto trauma centres over the weekend in separate motor vehicle collisions.

On April 17 at about 3:50 pm, officers were called to a collision on Taunton Road near Bethesda Road in Clarington. A Mazda SUV was travelling westbound when a second Mazda vehicle pulled alongside on the shoulder of the road. This second vehicle lost control, struck the passenger side of the lead vehicle and then spun into the north ditch, striking a street light pole. Clarington Fire had to remove the top of the vehicle to extricate the 50-year-old female driver from Marmora. She was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre as a precaution, with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV was not injured and the investigation is continuing, said a police media release.

On April 18, at around 3:45 pm, officers were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Kingston Road at Walnut Lane in Pickering. As a result of the collision, a Toyota Rav 4 ended up on its roof in the intersection with a driver and passenger inside. A Ford Escape was located nearby with extensive front end damage. Pickering Fire attended and extricated the 65-year-old female driver of the Rav 4. She was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with multiple serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Kingston Road was closed for several hours while the collision scene was processed. No other injuries were serious. The investigation is continuing, it added.
