Volunteers wanted for Scot Pine Thinning Day at Uxbridge

Uxbridge is looking for volunteers needed to cut small Scot Pine trees in meadows as part of protection of the open landscape and habitat for grassland species.

The event will take place on November 7 from 9:30 am to noon, rain or shine. Volunteers are requested to meet in the parking lot at the entry to Uxbridge Countryside Preserve, 12 Welwood Drive (behind Walmart).

Volunteers should bring work gloves and wear appropriate foot wear. If possible, they would need to bring their own loppers and/or hand saws to cut small pines, said a statement adding that volunteers under the age of 12 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

It said social distancing will be expected.

The Scot Pine is a prolific seed producer and its progression into open meadow areas is very common in Ontario. To control the spread of the Scot Pine an annual spring and fall event will be scheduled to remove regenerating plants.
