Whitby mayor debunks flyer ‘allegations and claims’

Elizabeth Roy

Many residents have contacted the Town of Whitby with questions and concerns about a flyer that has been delivered to homes across the community, according to Mayor Elizabeth Roy.

She said the flyer contains allegations and claims regarding the Town of Whitby and members of the council.

Roy said the flyer is being distributed by a group calling itself the Whitby Taxpayers Federation, which has no publicly available information. The website it directs to is connected to the recent Jail Not Bail campaign.

“Many of the matters referenced relate to decisions made by Durham Regional Council, not Whitby Council, and are misleading, inaccurate or lacking context,” said the mayor.

Residents’ Information

“I urge residents to exercise caution before providing personal information — such as your full name, address, telephone number or email address — to petitions, websites or organizations that do not clearly disclose who they are, how they are funded, or how your information will be collected, stored and used,” she added.

Roy said if residents have questions about any of the issues raised, “I encourage them to contact their elected representatives directly”.

“I also encourage residents to ask questions, seek out reliable sources of information, and make decisions based on facts, not political rhetoric or anonymous campaigns,” she added.
