Whitby mulls ending contract with closed meeting investigator

Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy has announced that the town council is looking at terminating its contract with closed meeting investigator.

The brief announcement was made in the mayor’s monthly newsletter for February. No other details were presented.

Regional Councillor Chris Leahy has alleged that the closed meeting investigator “fee ranged from $495 to $875 per hour in 2024”.

Leahy had promised to move a motion to dismiss the investigator, during a war of words with the town council towards the end of last year.

The investigator had ruled that no ‘secret’ council meeting took place as Leahy had alleged, during a recess on October 7.

Towards the end of the acrimonious October 7 council meeting (see below), there was a five-minute recess declared by Mayor Roy. During this recess Leahy and fellow councillor Steve Yamada, were left in the room (watch video link below from 52:30 minutes onward).
