The Town of Whitby is moving ahead with plans to build a new fire station in West Whitby.
On Monday, June 9, the town took a key step by purchasing a 3.44-acre parcel of land from the provincial Ministry of Transportation. The site, located at the southwest corner of Des Newman Boulevard and Rossland Road, will be home to Fire Station 6, which is expected to open in 2027.
Quick Facts:
- It will create 20 new firefighter positions and generate several temporary construction-related jobs.
- Council has approved a $17 million capital project for the fire station’s construction.
“As one of the fastest growing areas in our town, West Whitby needs the right services in place to support community safety and wellbeing,” said Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy. “This new fire station will help improve response times, create good local jobs, and ensure firefighters are ready to respond when seconds matter most. It’s one more way we’re bringing care closer to home and building safe, livable, and well-served neighbourhoods.”
Whitby Fire Chief Mike Hickey also highlighted the strategic importance of the new station’s location: “This station, at the intersection of Des Newman Boulevard and Rossland Road, is ideally located to address emergency response times in the area. This station will also provide major strategic and tactical advantages, from a public and firefighter safety and depth of coverage perspective.”
“With Rossland Road slated as an interchange to the 412, Whitby Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) will have direct access to the 400 series highways to address motor vehicle collisions or other emergencies, while also providing an efficient response to both the north and south of our growing municipality,” Hickey added.
Lorne Coe, MPP for Whitby, said: “With West Whitby experiencing rapid growth, it’s vital that our infrastructure keeps pace. That’s why I was proud to advocate on behalf of the Town of Whitby to secure this critical parcel of land from the Ministry of Transportation. The new West Whitby Fire Hall will not only enhance emergency response in one of our fastest-growing areas, it will also create jobs and strengthen community safety for years to come.”
