20+ help stations at Mary Street garage: Oshawa Mayor

Oshawa has installed 20+ assistance stations in the Mary Street Parking Garage to strengthen the safety, security and well-being of the Downtown Oshawa community, Mayor Dan Carter yesterday reported.

“There are three stations per level, at each stairwell, which include a combination of integrated video and intercom. Should a button on a station be pressed, the system has the ability to transfer emergency calls direct to the 24/7 Control Security Centre,” said Carter in a message to business community stakeholders.

“The Control Security Centre provides a fast security mobile unit dispatch or police dispatch, as the situation dictates. Each unit has a camera that provides an additional line of sight to better assess unfolding situations while also having a beacon/strobe light on top of the station that is always lit and flashes during an emergency call in,” he explained.

He said on February 28, city council endorsed the continuation of dedicated downtown patrols comprised of collaborative teams between Corporate Security and Municipal Law Enforcement. The downtown patrols address objectives #28 and #29 in the Community Safety, Security and Well-Being in Oshawa’s Downtown Action Plan which was approved by council on September 27, 2021.

Meaningful Recovery

“In the time since I shared my message with the business community in early February, we have received welcome news from the province that we are moving through the continued easing of public health measures in response to the improvement of health system indicators. The ability to see the increased capacity for gathering sizes in many of our local establishments is an important step forward to support meaningful recovery of businesses in our great city,” said the mayor.

“With events scheduled at the Regent Theatre, The Biltmore, The Music Hall and the Tribute Communities Centre, the return of fans to cheer on the Oshawa Generals and exhibitions being prepared to explore at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Ontario Regiment Museum, Canadian Automotive Museum, Parkwood Estate and the Oshawa Museum, I am excited to welcome residents and visitors alike back to Oshawa’s many attractions.

“As your mayor, one of my top priorities is promoting all that Oshawa has to offer and encouraging visitors who attend a concert or event in our downtown to experience more of the options in the area, whether that be stopping in to explore the unique and diverse offerings from one of the merchants or enjoying a pre-concert meal,” he added.

“The voice of business in our community is of upmost importance, and I encourage you to work in partnership with the city to support your new, existing or expanding business in our community. Your investments in Oshawa play an integral part of making this the place where people want to live, work, learn and play.  We are working to make it easier for you to engage with us…We want to hear from you, understand how we can support your recovery and celebrate your successes,” the mayor said.

  1. What’s amazing is the particular parking grounds that our mayor has discussed is usually not even close to being filled to capacity when there’s a oshawa general’s game
Most of them will park along the street where they don’t have to pay and where the bylaw doesn’t mean check up to see if they are paying at the meters Now where most of the vehicles park would he put one of the stations around those areas?
