$650,000 support to air-condition Newcastle Community Hall

The Municipality of Clarington is providing $650,000 to support the installation of an air conditioning system in the Newcastle Community Hall.

Newcastle Community Hall, which celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, is a heritage building and community focal point for Newcastle. The facility hosts a variety of events, including weddings, banquets, concerts, funerals, business events and markets. A new air conditioning system will help maintain safer temperatures, improve air quality, and preserve designated historical features such as the wood panelling. In addition, the air conditioner will enable the hall to book additional rentals and increase revenue, said a municipal statement.

“The Newcastle Community Hall is a Clarington landmark and the heart of the Village of Newcastle,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “Investing in this building will make it so much easier and more comfortable for our community groups and members of the public to use and enjoy.”

This historic building, a gift from the Massey family, is a cornerstone of our heritage and a vital hub for the people of Newcastle and surrounding areas. With air conditioning, the hall will serve our community even better,” said Theresa Vanhaverbeke, Legacy Committee Chair.

The Newcastle Community Hall Legacy Committee will partner to cover a significant portion of the cost ($325,000).

The municipal funding is part of A Plan for Growth: Clarington’s 2024-27 Budget.
