City to use $300,000 of casino money for residents’ projects

The City of Pickering has announced that it will use $300,000 from casino revenues to fund projects chosen by residents.

Pickering has so far received close to $48 million from OLG (see below)

A city statement said outdoor fitness equipment had been selected as the neighbourhood project through the city’s first participatory budget process.

As a result, $300,000 has been allocated in the 2025 capital budget, with funding provided through casino revenues, according to city officials. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to fostering collaboration and promoting public engagement in local decision-making, said a city statement.

Through the budget process, residents had a direct say on how a portion of the municipal budget could be spent, with 600 residents weighing in on five priorities to enhance community quality of life, according to officials. The most-supported project will now be implemented in each ward, with final locations to be determined by city staff.

In addition to outdoor fitness equipment, the announcement states that residents considered options such as dog park enhancements, a shade structure with a gathering space, street furniture, or opting out of funding these neighbourhood projects entirely. Each proposed initiative aligned with the city’s Recreation & Parks Ten-Year Plan and Corporate Strategic Plan, ensuring that public investments support growth and development in Pickering.

“By implementing a participatory budget exercise, we’ve inspired residents to step forward as true decision-makers, alongside elected officials and city staff,” said Mayor Kevin Ashe. “Residents are the heart of this community, and this engaging process has given citizens a direct role in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods. Through this collaborative approach, we are fostering a stronger, more connected community.”

City staff will report back on timeline and project progress through regular updates to the project page, available at LetsTalkPickering.ca/Budget.
