Pickering city council has approved a contract for the design of a new fire hall that will replace the aging Fire Station #5, originally built in 1969.
According to a report from the City of Pickering’s Community Services department, ZAS Architects has been awarded the consulting services contract for the design of the new fire hall at a cost of $590,208 (net HST). The total gross project cost is estimated at $755,970, with a net project cost of $680,774.
The new facility will be located at 1521 Bayly Street, at the southeast corner of Bayly Street and Sandy Beach Road. This site was selected for its proximity to the current station to ensure continued service coverage. The new two-storey, two-bay station will be built to meet existing operational needs, including capacity for up to four vehicles and accommodations for up to eight fire suppression staff.
While the new station is under development, the current Station #5 at 1616 Bayly Street will remain fully operational to avoid any disruption in emergency services.
The building is being designed with sustainability in mind. The city aims to meet Canada Green Building council Zero Carbon Building Design Certification standards and align with the 2024–2029 Corporate Energy Management Plan. Energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate resilience are key considerations in the design.
The project is funded through the city’s 2020 and 2025 capital budgets, supported by a 10-Year Internal Loan and the Casino Reserve.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026 once the design is complete and a construction contract is awarded.
