Ajax residents to see 4.89% hike in property tax for 2025

The Town of Ajax has unveiled the proposed levy in its budget, which shows an increase of 4.89 per cent in total property tax for 2025.

Other municipalities to announce their levies for 2025 include Oshawa which has proposed a 7.87 per cent tax hike, Whitby has set its budget with 3.99 per cent tax increase, while Durham Regional Council has capped 2025 property tax rise at just below 5 per cent (see below). Pickering on Monday proposed a 3.75 per cent levy increase for 2025.

The 2025 budget identifies $101,333,800 as the amount to be raised from property taxation for the Town of Ajax, said a town budget paper.

“The municipal tax rate increase is based on the budget amount deemed adopted. The regional tax rate increase is determined by the Region of Durham and the education rate increase is determined by the Province of Ontario.

Adding all three elements, the total levy increase for 2025 will be 4.89 per cent.

The proposed tax rate increase for the town is 6.67 per cent which is an effective change of 2.19 per cent on the average residential property tax bill, said the budget document.

“The monthly increase of the town portion of the tax bill is approximately $11.36 per month based on the estimated average assessed home in Ajax of $494,200 as identified by MPAC,” it said.

The most important source of revenue for the town is property taxes accounting for 79.1 per cent of the revenue needed to fund the services provided including fire and emergency response, planning and building services, road maintenance, winter control and maintenance of parks.

Other sources of income are users, planning and stormwater fees, as well as income from investments, recoveries, grants and donations and reserves etc.
