The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca) yesterday issued an alert over fast flowing water in low lying areas and roads after yesterday and last night’s rainfall.
“Widespread flooding is not anticipated, however fast flowing water and flooding of low lying areas and roadways may be expected in flood prone areas,” said Cloca.
After a day of rain, last evening (6:14 pm) Environment Canada advised of additional rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm were expected by the time the rain eased overnight.
Environment Canada special weather statement in effect for our area said a low-pressure system is moving in from the southwest and was expected to bring 20-30mm of rain, which could reach as high as 40mm in localized areas where heavy downpours from thunderstorms occur.
Large amounts of rainfall can cause soils to become saturated very quickly, resulting in increased runoff. Consequently, higher than normal water levels and flows can be expected in our streams, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges, said Cloca.
It asked all residents to stay away from all watercourses, shorelines, and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Increased wave activity, elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks and Lake Ontario shorelines continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Please remind children of these dangers.
This Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Wednesday May 4th, 2022 or until further notice, it added.
