Bowmanville GO bridge works to start later this year

More intensive works on the GO train extension to Bowmanville are planned to begin later this year, according to a Metrolinx official.

Early works began this summer with clearing along the corridor and moving and relocating service obstructions “before beginning more intensive works, which we hope to do later in the year”, said Paul Judge while updating the Metrolinx board on the project yesterday.

Early works are underway for the 18-km extension of GO train service on new dedicated tracks from Oshawa to Bowmanville, beginning with the Albert Street watermain in Oshawa.

“Work has also begun to relocate the Albert Street watermain (top right image) away from the path of the new track. Relocating this watermain is a key requirement before bridgeworks at Abbot Street and Simcoe Street [in Oshawa] can proceed as planned for later in the year,” said the Metrolinx official.

Briefing about the progress of GO and UP capital project, Judge said the 18-km east extension will follow Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) right of way. It will make it easier for people in this rapidly growing Durham Region to get into and on to GO.

He said the radio tower pictured on the left top image, is now in the plans of being decommissioned now that a new one has been installed.

Earlier, Michael Lindsay, Metrolinx CEO, told the board that the Lakeshore East line is ready for the construction of the future fourth track.
