Metrolinx, the operator of GO Transit, has announced works in the City of Oshawa related to the Bowmanville GO train extension project.
The Ontario rail agency plans to use micro-tunneling to install a new watermain along the Albert Street corridor as part of the project.
According to Metrolinx, the installation micro-tunneling is a trenchless, guided boring technique designed to minimize surface disruption. The watermain will run beneath existing railway tracks and connect with the current water system at Fisher Street and Albany Street.
Metrolinx stated that construction is set to begin on April 21 and continue through July 31.
Work will generally take place Monday through Friday, between 7 am and 7 pm. However, some overnight activity is expected during the micro tunneling phase. Work schedules may shift depending on weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
According to Metrolinx, construction will occur within the rail corridor and on surrounding public roads and property. Nearby residents may notice noise, vibration, dust, and some removal of low-lying vegetation. Temporary lighting will be used overnight but will be aimed away from homes to reduce impact.
Metrolinx says crews will take several steps to limit disruption, including:
- Reducing unnecessary equipment idling
- Using white-noise backup alarms
- Monitoring and mitigating noise and vibration
- Installing proper fencing and signage to secure the site
Pedestrian and traffic impacts:
Pedestrian traffic will be rerouted around active work areas via temporary detours. Updated maps can be found on the Lakeshore East Line GO Expansion website.
For vehicle traffic:
- Fisher Street will be detoured onto Albert Street
- Albany Street traffic will be rerouted south via Albert Street to Elena Avenue
- No additional transit disruptions are expected
Metrolinx is asking residents to use caution near construction zones and follow all posted signs and detours.
