Embattled Canada Post seems to have found a loyalist in Durham’s Township of Brock, which during its council meeting on Monday, passed a resolution to oppose any moves to disrupt the Crown institution in the township.
“A Notice of Motion was passed for the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Brock to formally oppose any decision or consideration to close rural Canada Post branches or eliminate rural mail delivery within the township,” said the township in a public notice.
It said the resolution was forwarded to the minister responsible for Canada Post, local Members of Parliament, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) for their support and advocacy.
Canada Post has accumulated more than $5 billion in losses since 2018, and projects a loss of $1.5 billion this year. It has been having serious ongoing labour disputes with strikes impacting performance.
This week it laid off an unannounced number of managers as part of cost-cutting and streamlining exercise.
