Clarington residents gathered at the Courtice Community Complex on Sunday for the annual Mayor’s Levee, an event that featured free family activities and the official opening of the municipality’s first-ever outdoor refrigerated skating rink.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Mayor Adrian Foster and members of council, marked the debut of the new rink, designed to provide year-round recreational opportunities, said a municipal statement.
The event attracted some 2,000 attendees who participated in activities such as skating, swimming, and on-ice performances by the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club.
“This is a place where families will make lasting memories, skating in winter and enjoying a year-round community hub,” said Mayor Foster. “This is just the beginning; we’re working to build refrigerated outdoor skating rinks across Clarington.”
The municipality said the rink’s opening aligns with Clarington’s 2024–2027 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes recreation, arts, and culture. Plans are underway for additional rinks in Newcastle at the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex (2025) and at the new South Bowmanville Recreation Centre (2026).
The Mayor’s Levee also featured a variety of family-friendly activities, including games, storytime sessions, and opportunities for residents to engage with Clarington Emergency and Fire Services as well as Durham Regional Police Services.
