Clarington school swatting suspect still at large

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect connected to a false 911 call that prompted a significant emergency response near a Bowmanville high school.

On Thursday, February 27, around 12:55 pm, officers from East Division responded to a report of a male allegedly carrying a firearm near Clarington Central Secondary School. Officers quickly attended the scene and determined there was no actual threat to students or staff.

According to police, the call is believed to be a case of ‘swatting’—a dangerous hoax where someone makes a false emergency report to provoke a heavy police response.

The investigation revealed the call was made from a pay phone located outside a convenience store at 2 Glenabbey Drive in Courtice.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 35 to 50 years old. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a camouflage baseball cap, a black hoodie with a white Under Armour logo, black pants, and grey shoes. He is believed to be associated with a white 2016 or 2017 Chevrolet Cruze four-door sedan.

Anyone with information or who recognizes the individual is encouraged to view the suspect’s photos at drps.ca.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact D/Cst. Cronin of the East Division Criminal Investigative Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1649.
