The Durham Region Health Department has issued a Cold Weather Alert effective the evening of Monday, January 6, and continuing overnight into Tuesday morning, January 7.
Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves and their families from the frigid conditions.
Parents are advised to dress children in layers, ensuring the outer layer is windproof, when preparing them for school on Tuesday.
The Health Department also recommends covering exposed skin by wearing hats, warm mittens or gloves, and insulated boots to prevent frostbite and maintain body warmth.
Day starts at -22°C
For today (January 7) Environment Canada has forecast a wind chill minus of 22°C in the morning and minus 14°C in the afternoon. UV index 1 or low. It forecast a mix of sun and cloud. 40 per cent chance of flurries in the afternoon, and wind northwest 30 kmh gusting to 50.
Tonight will be mainly cloudy with 40 per cent chance of flurries early in the evening. Wind northwest 20 kmh gusting to 40 becoming light after midnight. Wind chill minus 14°C in the evening and minus 23°C overnight.
