Curbside natural Christmas tree collection in January

Durham Region announced it will provide its annual curbside collection of natural Christmas trees. Natural Christmas trees will be composted with leaf and yard waste.

When and where:

  • Ajax and Pickering: Christmas tree collection will be on regular collection days during the weeks of January 9 and 16 only.
  • Brock, Clarington, Scugog and Uxbridge: Christmas tree collection will take place on Monday, January 9 and Monday, January 16 only.
  • Oshawa and Whitby: Residents should refer to their municipal waste collection calendar for their scheduled collection date or contact their local municipality for more information.

Meanwhile, Oshawa has asked residents to register to receive curbside Christmas tree pickup in the New Year. Register at www.oshawa.ca/treecollection or call Service Oshawa at 905-436-3311, by Thursday, January 5, 2023.

Once registered, Oshawa residents will receive curbside collection of Christmas trees during the week of January 9-13. Tree collection may not coincide with your waste collection day. All Christmas trees will be collected no later than Friday, January 13, said the city.

Durham Region said residents must ensure the following set-out specifications:

  1. All tinsel, decorations, wire, plastic bags, lights, tree skirts, nails and stands must be removed from the tree.
  2. Trees must be set out by 7 am on your collection day, but no earlier than 7 pm the evening before your collection day.
  3. Trees set out in plastic bags will not be collected.
  4. Trees exceeding three metres (10 feet) must be cut in half for collection.
  5. Please ensure trees are not buried in snowbanks or frozen to the ground.
  6. Do not place Christmas trees on top of, or behind snowbanks – ensure the tree is fully accessible for collection.
