Following the freezing rain last evening and possible return of fog, road users are advised to be careful during their early morning commute.
In a special weather statement for yesterday evening, Environment Canada said with temperatures near the freezing mark, there is a threat of freezing rain. Slippery roads and surfaces are possible.
It also said near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring.
Dense fog patches continued yesterday afternoon, although many areas reported improved visibility due to rain passing through.
Visibility was expected to deteriorate again last night after the rain departs. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero, Environment Canada said.
If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
Low-level flooding
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca), meanwhile, advised that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, is forecasting unsettled weather conditions and warmer temperatures in our area over the next four days.
Temperatures are expected to be above the freezing mark with periods of precipitation of 25-45mm likely. Milder temperatures, combined with precipitation and an average snow-water equivalent of 27mm according to recent snow survey data will result in increased runoff causing higher than normal water levels and flows in our streams, Cloca said.
“Widespread flooding is not anticipated, however fast flowing water and flooding of low lying areas and roadways may be expected in flood-prone areas,” it said.
In addition, milder temperatures and rain could weaken and cause the breakup of ice cover where it exists, causing localized water level increases, ice jams, and flooding, it added.
Cloca is asking all residents to stay away from all watercourses, shorelines, and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Increased wave activity, elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks and Lake Ontario shorelines continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Please remind children of these dangers.
This Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Sunday January 28 or until further notice, Cloca said.
