Regional Council is said to have set aside funds to acquire some 400,000 square feet of land for a new and larger police complex in Oshawa, according to a regional councillor.
The expanded Oshawa HQ for the Central Division is part of the much-debated $1.1 billion police 10 year plan, which has been received for information by the current council and held for approval by the new regional council to be formed after the October municipal elections.
“Durham Regional Council has started the process of looking for the best site in Oshawa for this new combined station and campus, and has provided sufficient funds to close any land purchase if an appropriate location is found,” said Councillor Brian Nicholson, Ward 5 Oshawa and Durham Council.
The new site will house a modern training facility, Central East Division replacement, and a dedicated Police Headquarters. The current site is a 53-year-old leased building.
“Any further financial steps beyond the land purchase and some initial designs for the campus will be decided after the comprehensive review of financial and future capital projects that council approved last month,” said Nicholson.
Regional Council Vote
“Thank you for your support in voting to enable DRPS to begin addressing critical capital investments,” said Police Chief Peter Moreira, in a letter to the councillor dated July 2.
Councillor Nicholson had consistently voted against the adoption of the Durham Regional Police service (DRPS) plan (see below).
“I was proud to move that motion as while police services are important in our community, it is equally important that regional property taxpayers are not burdened with massive future tax hikes,” Nicholson explained.
“Finding the right balance between providing safety and services and controlling costs and taxes should and will be the main priority of the new incoming regional council. I am hopeful to be part of the new council so I may continue to work to reduce impact while still making sure our communities are safe. With you support, we can continue to do both.
Critical First Step
“To deliver effective policing in a rapidly growing region, we require purpose-built facilities aligned with legislative, operational and community expectations. The support secured last week is a critical first step in addressing immediate pressures and positioning us for the future,” said DRPS Chief Moreira.
“We recognize the financial pressures on our community and will continue working with all levels of government to minimize impacts on taxpayers. Importantly this decision gives us a clear path forward and enables more focused, productive engagement,” he added.
