Horst Thajer’s waves bring cheer to passersby

Seasons Clarington resident, Horst Thajer, is gaining attention in the local community for spreading joy and his giving spirit.

Called affectionately as “Mr. Waver” by passersby, Horst routinely sits outside the residence to wave to those passing by and has quickly become a friendly, familiar face in the neighbourhood. On the last day of school, many children dropped off heartfelt notes for him, thanking him for always making their day brighter on their way to school.

A registered nurse who works in the area also shared her affection for Waver for making her smile every day for the last year, uplifting her spirits during challenging times.

“I enjoy reading the warm messages and building a connection with my neighbours,” says Thajer. “Not only does it give me a sense of purpose, it truly makes me happy to give back to the community I live in.”

It’s no wonder Thajer is a member of the Seniorosity program at Season Retirement Communities which provides opportunities for its residents to connect with people and organizations in the greater community and realize the benefit of volunteering.

Recently, Seasons Clarington hosted their One Can Make a Difference food drive, a corporate challenge to collect canned and non-perishable goods to donate to the local food bank along with a $2,000 monetary donation. To encourage donations, Horst stood outside the local grocery store where he inspired several members of the community to purchase non-perishable goods to donate to the cause. Seasons Clarington was able to collect 1,287 cans to donate to St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

  1. Mr. Waver is the best part of our morning. He always makes us smile on the way to school, and my children and I always enthusiastically wave back!
