Ice Storm Hit Townships: Yard waste collection starts April 7

North Durham municipalities hit by the recent ice storm, have announced that tree and yard waste collection will begin this year from April 7.

The Region of Durham has posted information regarding how to include any ice storm tree debris as part of regular garden waste collection beginning the week of April 2.

Durham Region announced that residents whose properties have fallen branches or trees due to the storm are advised to prepare their brush for the seasonal leaf and yard waste collection, which will begin on April 7 for the townships of Brock, Uxbridge, and Scugog.

Brush must be securely tied in bundles up to one metre long and 76 centimetres wide, and no branch should exceed 10 centimetres in diameter. Temporary acceptance of storm-related yard waste will also be available at Durham Waste Management Facilities in Oshawa, Scugog, and Brock, with standard fees waived for dedicated loads until further notice.

Temporary bins for storm-related household waste have been set up for Township of Brock residents at the following locations:

  • Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre, 176 Main Street, Beaverton
  • Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre, 91 Elliot Street, Cannington
  • Sunderland Memorial Arena, 20 Park Street, Sunderland

Residents are asked to place any food waste resulting from the power outage in their green bin for regular curbside collection. Overflow material may be placed in clear bags or cardboard boxes next to the green bins on collection day, with the restriction that green bins cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms.

Scugog Burn Permits

Following the recent freezing rain storm event, the Township of Scugog has advised residents of options when it comes to cleaning up fallen trees and debris.

Although there is currently no burn ban in place in the township, any burning requires a valid 2025 burn permit. Burn permits can be obtained through Burn Permits page. Only General or Agricultural burn permits allow for the burning of brush. Residents are asked to ensure that they have a valid permit and comply with all burning guidelines and requirements.

Alternatively, bi-weekly yard/waste pick up begins the week of April 7 in the Township of Scugog.

Additionally, the Durham Waste Management Facility in Scugog is now open and will temporarily accept storm related yard waste. Standard fees will be waived for dedicated loads of yard waste.

Township of Uxbridge

In response to the recent ice storm, the Township of Uxbridge said it is committed to assisting residents with storm cleanup efforts. Crews will be deployed to support tree debris removal in affected areas.

Once it is safe to do so, all properties in Uxbridge, with properties of 2 acres or less, may place ice-storm-related tree debris at the roadside for collection. The Township will be picking up, chipping, and removing debris over the coming weeks with assistance from local contractors. Collection will begin Monday, April 7th, and the deadline to have debris at the roadside is April 13th.

To ensure a smooth collection process, residents must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Only ice-storm-related tree debris will be collected. No inorganic material will be accepted.
  • Branches must be no larger than 4 inches in diameter and must be placed with the butt end facing the roadway.
  • The Township will not access private property for debris collection.
  • Excessive amounts of debris beyond what is deemed reasonable may not be collected.
  • Keep ditches clear of debris to prevent flooding and ensure proper drainage.
  • Place debris a safe distance from roads to avoid traffic hazards.
  • All locations, both urban and rural, will be serviced the same way.

For those wishing to drop off tree debris, the Scugog Waste Management Facility (1623 Reach Street, Port Perry) will be open for free debris disposal. Residents are encouraged to use this option where possible, Uxbridge said.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as we work on clean-up efforts. Please continue to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas,” it added.
