Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said officers from the Central East division were conducting a RIDE line on Sunday when a driver took off and crashed his vehicle.
He was found to be more than double the legal limit.
A DRPS statement said the check was being conducted in the area of Toronto Avenue and Drew Street in Oshawa.
A vehicle travelling through the line was stopped and driver was asked to pull over after officers detected an odour of alcohol, said a police statement.
It said the suspect, instead, accelerated at a high rate of speed. A pursuit was initiated as the vehicle fled westbound on Highway 401. It existed on Stevenson Road and drove north at high speeds running several red lights.
It crashed along Stevenson Road North and Adelaide Street. The driver fled on foot but was taken into custody, police said.
A 33-year old man from Clarington provided breath samples which showed 200mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The suspect was charged.
If you see a driver you suspect is impaired, please call 9-1-1 to report it; the call you make could save a life, said the police.
However, all’s well that ends well.
DRPS North Division officers too conducted a ride spot check in Beaverton last evening (see image above), and were happy to report that there were no impaired drivers.
