Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) said a male was arrested for driving while impaired on Saturday, March 9, in Whitby, after he exited the 412 Highway, struck another vehicle, and fled the area on foot.
It said officers from DRPS Central West Divison reponded to a vehicle collision in the area of Dundas Street and Highway 412.
A vehicle travelling westbound on Dundas Street had been struck by a Honda that had exited the highway and failed to stop at the intersection, police said.
The Honda had become wedged under a guard rail. Its driver fled the area on foot.
Officers, with assistance from DRPS Remote Piloted Aircraft System (drone), K9 Unit and Air1, searched the area. Air1 helicopter directed the officers to the suspect a short distance away.
The male showed clear signs of alcohol consumption and impairment and was taken into custody without incident. No physical injuries were sustained from the collision, police said.
They said a 37-year old from Toronto was charged, after two alcohol tests showed 160 mg and 150 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. He was twice over the limit.
His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days, police said.
