Durham police yesterday said a male is facing numerous charges following a collision in a stolen school bus while impaired in Ajax.
On Monday, May 11 at about 11:30 pm, members of West Division responded to an impaired driving call in the area of Taunton Road West and Westney Road North.
Police received reports of a shortened school bus driving erratically before attempting to pull into a McDonald’s drive-thru and colliding with the drive-thru barrier. Officers arrived on scene and initiated a traffic stop, successfully stopping the vehicle. The driver exhibited signs of impairment and was taken into custody without incident.
Further investigation revealed that the school bus had sustained exterior damage after the suspect unlawfully entered a bus yard in North York and stole the bus, possibly colliding with other parked unoccupied buses. In addition, the suspect stole radios and keys to other vehicles in the yard.
During the investigation, the suspect provided officers with a false name but was subsequently identified.
The suspect, age 38 of No Fixed Address was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
