The Regional Municipality of Durham said works on the reconstruction of Farewell Street (Regional Road 56) are scheduled to begin on Monday May 18. Funding details were not provided.
Part of another key southern Oshawa road, Simcoe Street, is closed for a period of at least two years since January for the reconstruction of the bridge over the CPKC rail line by Metrolinx for the Bowmanville Extension.
Weather-permitting, reconstruction of Farewell Street will take more than a year (until September 2027), and will include full and partial road closures.
The region has hired Esposito Bros Construction to reconstruct Farewell Street (Regional Road 56). This work will take place from Harbour Road to South of Bloor Street East (Regional Road 22) in the City of Oshawa.
Esposito Bros will be on site the week of May 18 to start preparing for work the construction is expected to finish by September 2027 depending on weather conditions, the region said in a notice issued on May 7.
Traffic Impacts
There will be a road closure from May 18 till December.
Access to local traffic will be from Wentworth Street East (Regional Road 60) to Harbour Road, from May 18 to December. Lane restrictions will be in place for the duration of the project on Farewell Street, from Bloor Street East (Regional Road 22) to Wentworth Street East.
Project Details
The reconstruction involves:
- Removing and reconstructing the granular road base and asphalt surface
- Replacing and improving curbs, sidewalks and driveways
- Installing and upgrading storm drainage sewers
- Street lighting and traffic signal upgrades
- Construction of a new asphalt multi-use pathway
- Rehabilitation of retaining walls at the CN rail bridge overpass, and
- Installation of a new sewage and water distribution system.
“This project is the result of dozens of meetings, phone calls, emails back and forth, in person discussions with both city and regional staff, lobbying for funding at both levels of government and securing the support and approval of colleagues at Durham Regional Council and Oshawa City Council. The effort seemed endless at times but this commencement of the project makes all that work worthwhile,” said Councillor Brian Nicholson, Oshawa Ward 5 and Durham Council.
“I am sure that all those who drive this road regularly will be pleased that it is finally being reconstructed. Once completed, this roadway will be a good addition to the southern Oshawa roadway and transportation network.
Thank you to everyone for your patience as we worked to get this project approved, funded, designed and now underway,” he added.
Maybe they should look at replacing olive ave from Albert to ritson and bloor st eastbound from Albert to 401 intersection. Two years of heavy traffic on olive Ave will not work. It’s a mess now.
