Knock Down Hunger @ Ribfest: Durham aims at world record

An attempt at a Guinness World Record will be made in Durham Region during a simultaneous attempt to help knock down hunger.

The youth-led Canada Day event during this year’s Bowmanville Ribfest aims to topple the record of more than 11,936 packets of boxed macaroni & cheese in support of Feed the Need in Durham.

This Canada Day, the Knock Down Hunger Challenge will become one of the featured attractions at Clarington’s Canada Day Celebration at the Garnet B. Rickard Complex in Bowmanville, where organizers, community partners and youth volunteers will attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for the Most Packaged Food Boxes Toppled in a Domino Fashion.

The current world record is 11,936 boxes.

Community Support

Organizers are inviting schools, businesses, churches, community organizations, neighbourhood groups and residents across Durham Region to help collect enough boxes of macaroni & cheese to surpass that mark while supporting Feed the Need in Durham.

The event combines community action, youth leadership and an visual spectacle as thousands of boxes are carefully arranged into a massive domino chain before being toppled in a single continuous sequence.

“What makes this challenge special is that every box represents a meal that will help a family in our community,” said Nancy LeBlanc, organizer of the Knock Down Hunger Challenge. “We’re not simply chasing a world record — we’re creating a movement led by young people who want to make a difference. Our main reason for doing this is to make sure ‘No Child Goes Hungry’ over the summer months when school food programs are not available.”

Community Champions

With a lot of community support, the campaign is powered by children and teens as they help to organize fundraising initiatives, host pop-up food drives, recruit community champions, promote the event, assist with domino construction and help pack up the donations after the event to prepare them to be delivered to Feed the Need in Durham.

One of the campaign’s most inspiring features will be the Community Champions Banner, an 8×8 feet mural-style display created by local children and youth. The banner will recognize the schools, businesses, churches, community organizations and neighbourhood groups that helped collect donations and support the challenge.

Grand Finale

The event’s grand finale will feature the dramatic collapse of the “Wall of Hunger” — a structure built entirely from donated boxes of macaroni & cheese. As the final domino strikes the wall, it will topple to the ground, symbolizing what can happen when communities unite to fight hunger.

Organizers hope the event will not only set a world record but also generate significant awareness about food insecurity and inspire communities to work together to support local families in need.

Organizers will set up at Bowmanville Rotary Club’s Ribfest at Garnet Rickard’s in Bowmanville this weekend (June 12th-14th) collecting donations for the KDH Challenge.
