A bird-friendly Uxbridge team is leading the initiative to address issues related to migrating birds, which are confused by the impact of ‘Artificial Light At Night (Alan).
The Lights Out Uxbridge campaign is a pledge-based program aimed at reducing the impact of Alan through individual action, according to campaign organizers. The program focuses on reducing Alan’s influence on human health, energy costs, and the environment, as stated by environmental advocates.
Campaign organizers note that Alan is affecting living organisms worldwide, with wildlife experts reporting that it interferes with molecular, physiological, behavioral, and ecological processes.
In particular, the bird-friendly Uxbridge Team is leading the initiative to address issues related to migrating birds, which are confused by Alan and experience window collisions. Wildlife experts also point out that Alan is linked to disruptions in natural feeding and reproductive behaviors and is associated with an increased risk of chronic disease and cancer in humans.
The campaign advises that between April 1 and November 1, residents may help reduce the impact of Alan by switching off exterior lighting, turning off interior lighting when not in use, adjusting exterior lighting, and installing motion sensors. Energy efficiency guidelines recommend avoiding LED illumination above 2700K.
The campaign statement includes the message, “Lights Out, Uxbridge. Let’s take back the night.” Those interested in participating can sign the pledge at https://forms.gle/JHbGJVjJDmyE2vXJ9.
