Construction is now underway at Diane Hamre Recreation Complex as crews begin work on Clarington’s second outdoor refrigerated skating rink, announced Clarington municipality. The new rink, located in Newcastle, is expected to open this winter.
Clarington also reiterated its plans for a third outdoor skating facility—a skating trail—to be built at the future South Bowmanville Recreation Centre, with construction expected to begin this spring.
The facility will feature a refrigerated ice surface, a rubber skate mat, seating, lighting for evening use, a gas fire pit, and a warming room, similar to the outdoor rink in Courtice, Clarington officials said.
Municipal officials noted that the rink’s advanced refrigeration technology will ensure a consistently frozen surface even as temperatures fluctuate during winter. In the warmer months, the space will be repurposed for various community activities, including outdoor markets, events, and recreational sports.
“Our community’s love for skating just keeps growing. So, I’m thrilled we’re creating more opportunities for everyone to enjoy gliding in the fresh air under the open sky. This week, we broke ground, and by winter, we’ll be lacing up our skates and hitting the ice on the brand-new rink,” Mayor Adrian Foster said in a statement.
